Victoria Day weekend—the first long weekend of the summer—is just around the corner. Hopefully your motorhome’s road-ready and all set to take you out of Edmonton (or other Alberta city), and to your own patch of Canadian wilderness. If you don’t have solid plans yet for the three days, then here are a few RV camping ideas to get you pumped for May Two-Four.
1. Get your game on
Crack open a beer or other bevvy and assume position to catch, pass, throw, tackle, kick, hit or swing your way into fun. Traditional camping games include cornhole, capture the flag and football. Other possibilities are lawn bowling, badminton, kickball, ring toss and ultimate Frisbee. If the weekend is a little on the damp side, your favourite card and board games are a great way to keep everyone entertained.
2. Get wet
It may be too cold to go swimming, but that doesn’t mean you need to stay on dry land. Your RV adventure can include fishing, canoeing, kayaking, or even aqua zorbing. Water balloon fights are a blast for young and old alike and little ones can have hours of fun splashing in even the tiniest of inflatable pools.
3. Get eating
It may not be a five-star Calgary resort, but that doesn’t mean your motorhome can’t be the scene of many fine meals. Alberta AAA steaks served hot off the grill are a must, and what would camping be without s’mores galore? Hot coffee with eggs and bacon for breakfast, burgers or kebabs for lunch, and freshly caught fish for supper. Everything tastes better when you’re camping!
4. Take a hike
Strap on your boots and find yourself a walking stick because exploring the wilderness on foot is one of the best parts of camping. Alberta has some of the most breathtaking, scenic trails in the country. Hiking routes can be short loops easily covered in under an hour or all-day excursions. For even more amusement, try combining your hike with a wilderness scavenger hunt or geocaching.
5. Take it easy
Having fun doesn’t necessarily mean you need to have dozens of activities lined up. Camping can and should slow you down and give you time to read, daydream, drift, swing in a hammock, snooze, catch fireflies, stargaze, and otherwise relax and unwind.
